Natural diamonds combining perfect purity (containing minute imperfections not seen with 10x lens) with excellent color are rare. Significantly more rare are diamonds of such properties weighing several carats. Distinctive feature such as hardness can be an important factor in distinguishing diamond from other tones. Diamond is rated 10 on Moh's scale of hardness. It is the only mineral with this degree of hardness and can scratch corundum (rubies and sapphires) the only mineral with a hardness of 9. Corundum like diamonds are favorite minerals for jewelry making and they come in a variety of colors. Diamond is one of the most valuable stones together with ruby, sapphires and emeralds. Naturally a stone combining perfect purity with excellence of color are extremely rare especially those weight several carats and command extravagant prices.
