The four C's of Colored Gems

The four C's of colored gems (rubies, emeralds, topaz, sapphires, etc.) is color, color, color, and color!  The finer and the rarer the color, the less impact cutting, clarity and carat weight will have on the value of the gem. 

The four C's for diamonds are color (the tint), carat (the weight), clarity (presence of imperfections) and cut (the shape).  The four C's of diamonds make the purchase for the perfect diamond (for your budget) easier and helps in asking educated questions from your jeweler.

Would you like to own a colored diamond?

Are you ready to trade in your home, because that is what a colored diamond of substantial carat size and beautiful color would cost.  Any naturally colored diamond remotely affordable is a treated diamond.  If you have any doubts about the purchase of a colored diamond ask the jeweler to provide a certificate from a respected grading laboratory.  You will have to pay for the certificate since it is provided by a third party but what is the additional cost if it buys you peace of mind.  After all you will be paying a considerable amount of money for a natural colored diamond.   

Colored diamonds are very rare.  For every 10,000 white colored diamonds of varied shades one finds a single colored diamond.  Then there is no warrantee that the next colored diamond found will match the first one in hue.  This makes earrings and multiple stone settings for one color of diamond very difficult to put together.  There are many shades of diamonds with the most popular being a variety of white shades, yellows and browns.  The shades in discussion here are the rare peach-blossoms, greens, the pinks to reds, the blues, and the violet colored hues.   

Are there any other options for those in a limited budget that are interested in purchasing a colored diamond?  There are color treated diamonds.  A colored treated diamond must be labeled “color treated.”   A color treated diamond is a real diamond that has been irradiated or treated in some way to produce the different color.   

Color treated diamonds are real diamonds that have been exposed to some type of color treatment but this does not change the basic chemical composition of the diamond.  Color treated diamonds are very pretty and are a great substitute for the more expensive natural colored diamonds (see our pink diamond earrings above).

Another alternative would be to purchase a colored gem stone.  These would include the ruby, the sapphire, the emerald, tourmalines, and/or alexandrite.  These stones can provide the same shades of color found in colored diamonds.  However, do not be fooled into thinking that you are buying down when considering these stones.  Some shades of rubies and emeralds are considered to be extremely rare and more expensive than diamonds.  Rubies and emeralds that command such high prices are of top quality.  But all of these colored stones come in a variety of shades, cuts and purities and some can be found priced at your particular budget and these will make great substitutes for the expensive natural colored diamonds.
