Unsure about buying jewelry over the internet?

Just like shopping at your local jewelry store the most important thing to do is ask the right questions before you buy.  A good idea is to read up on the type of stone you are interested in purchasing.  For example, if it is a diamond read about how to spot fakes and as much as you can about the nature of the stone.

Knowing the four C's for diamonds and the four C's of colored gems helps the purchaser ask educated questions about diamonds and colored gems.  Remember that with diamonds jewelers sometimes use the term points in reference to the carat weight.  Also keep in mind the various terms used to describe metal products that are not gold (gold look alike) such as; rolled gold plate, gold filled, gold overlay, gold electroplated, gold plated.  There are also and various purities of gold such as 10k (41%), 14k (58%), 18k (75%) 22k (92%), and 24k (100% pure).  The various percentages tell us how much gold to another metal is in the composition.  Gold is mixed with other metals (copper, silver, zinc, nickel) to introduce hardness or to create various colors of gold like white gold, green gold or reddish gold.  Hardness is introduced into gold, because, the metal in its purest form is too soft and some stones such as diamonds, rubies or sapphires can cut their way out of the settings.  Also, rings which are exposed to daily activities require a harder form of gold than other pieces such as earrings.

Your online jewelry store will offer the best prices in jewelry (than regular walk in stores) because they have less overhead and can reach more customers.  In addition, shoppers can visit websites that specialize in comparative prizing.  These websites obtain prices form various stores when a key word is entered in their search box.  The items brought back from the search are not identical and this is good, because, you can shop around and look for the styles and prices that fit your particular budget.

One good piece of information to know is that retailers have been warned by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) guidelines not to advertise "a retail price as a wholesale price to the public."  If you see a retailer clearly breaking this regulation you can report them to the FTC and they will be fined and forced to change sales tactics.  Remember the "whole sale prices to the public" is only a sales strategy and a gimmick.
