Sugilite, one of the rarest gemstone known to man!

If you appreciate fine jewelry, but unique, one of a kind pieces, sugilite is the stone jewelry for you.  Sugilite is a rare gemstone from South Africa.  This stone comes in a medium to dark grape-purple color and is of dual nature.  It comes in translucent and non-translucent stones.  The non-translucent  stones come with unusual lines or splotches of black (see our round beads).  The translucent stones are depicted above with our oval stones.  This is a very unique gem, and we were excited to find it in bead form.  Shown above is a close up of the stones.  Our oval beads are color enhanced*, machine cut and polished in Africa.  The round beads are also machine cut and shaped.  The oval and round bead necklaces come with a sterling silver box clasp. Necklace is hand strung to 16 or 18 inches in length (specify).  If you desire these fabulous pieces in gold then its a special order.  For a quick comparison see what our competitor offers.  Due to demand email us to verify supply by using our feedback form.

Note:  Translucent or able to transmit light also understood as having transparency.  Translucent or transparent stones are considered precious stones. Non-transparent stones (round samples above) are considered semi-precious gems stones.  Turquoise another of our other featured stones falls in this category.

    Sugilite Care:

    ·        The general care instructions for turquoises should be fallowed with this stone.

    Sugilite facts of interest:

    ·        Sugilite is named for the Japanese geologist who discovered the first specimens in 1944, Ken-ichi Sugi. This stone is opaque with a waxy luster and ranges  from a pale grayish lavender to a deep dark purple.

    ·        Sugilite is also known under the trade names of "Royal Lavulite" and "Royal Azel"

    ·        Sugilite often contains black matrix,  reddish brown or yellowish blotches and ranges between 6 - 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

    ·        There are only a few mines of this gems tone discovered.  And only one mine produces gem quality stones.
